2019 Salmon Fishing Season

2019 Salmon Fishing Season

On June 4, 2019, Chief and Council met at a Duly Convened Chief and Council meeting to discuss Salmon Management and the opening date of the 2019 Listuguj Salmon Fishery.

Chief and Council would like to remind the community that all salmon fishers are to respect the Salmon Fishing Plan established in the 1995 Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation Law on Fisheries and Fishing (also known as the Salmon Law). More so, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Rangers will enforce the Salmon Fishing Plan on the entire Restigouche system, including New Brunswick waters.

Fishing season will begin on Wednesday, June 5th, 2019, at 4:00pm and end Friday, July 26, 2019 at 8:00am. Fishing is strictly forbidden on Mondays and Tuesdays. Fishing times are from Wednesdays at 4:00pm to Mondays at 8:00am, N.B. time.

For an official public notice of the opening date, fishing schedule, and fishing plan, please contact the Listuguj Rangers at (418) 788-2222.

Annual Fishing Plan Community Meeting

The Natural Resource Directorate (NRD) hosted a meeting with community salmon harvesters on May 22, 2019 at the Natural Resource building. A total of 18 community members were in attendance.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the annual fishing plan as per the Mi’gmaq Salmon Law. A presentation was given that covered the areas of salmon history, the current management regime, scientific activities, stock status, and the 2019 draft-fishing plan. A good and open discussion followed.

Many of the proposed changes were generally accepted, with some feedback to consider. The NRD has recorded all the feedback it received and will review the plan to accommodate the community needs.

A second meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, May 23, 2019 at the Elders Lodge. The meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. Supper is provided. We hope to see you there.

Thank you to all who attended, as your feedback is critical in developing and managing community based fisheries!

Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government to Review the Code of Conduct

Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government to Review the Code of Conduct

On Tuesday, May 21st, 2019, Chief and Council met at a Duly Convened Chief and Council meeting and discussed the recommended changes to the Code of Conduct.

During this meeting, it was determined that there will be no changes made to the Code of Conduct at this time. Instead, Council suggested and agreed to review the Code of Conduct in full detail through discussion and collaboration, to make sure that the document is in the best interest for Listuguj members. To do so, Council will take part in council training prior to the review of the document and to ensure that it is within Listuguj Mi’gmaq values and of best interest for the members of our community.

Furthermore, to stay consistent with the current requirements of the code, if there are any proposed changes brought forward by council, it will be first brought to community members of Listuguj through a general assembly before these changes can be implemented. The overall goal continues to be the development and implementation of strong laws, by-laws and operational codes that are in line with Listuguj Mi’gmaq values and that are supported and acknowledged by the community of Listuguj.
