Two New Housing Applicants Accepted for Rapid Housing Initiative

The Capital and Infrastructure Department is very proud to announce on behalf of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government that two applicants for the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) were successfully selected by the RHI Committee and will be able to move in their newly constructed housing units in the next few weeks.

The units are the first two (2) of a total of sixteen (16) rental units that will be assigned to applicants who fit the program’s criteria as defined by CMHC and the Listuguj Housing Policy.

This program is sponsored by CMHC and was made possible thanks to the hard work of many. We would like to acknowledge the efficient work of everyone involved in the process that has allowed two units to be completed and awarded to the successful community members in record time. We also want to give a special thanks to every worker working in the heat and rain to complete all sixteen units on time.

Please note that a second call-out will soon be announced. People who have yet to complete their application will be invited to do so. Applicants who are missing documents needed for applying will be given assistance. Community members who did not fill out a form will also have a chance to so. Everyone with a completed application and who fits all criteria will be given equal consideration by the RHI committee in future selections for the RHI rental units. Forms are available online and at the Natural Resources building.

On behalf of Capital & Infrastructure they would like to Thank you and to please be on the lookout for our second call-out which will be announced on the LMG website and Facebook page.

Roadway Upgrades of Caplin Road – Drainage of Caplin Road

Please be advised that Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government has initiated the third phase of the Storm Drainage Upgrades for the Caplin Road Area.  As part of this major project, Caplin Road will have roadway upgrades including new pavement structure, new concrete curbs and new concrete sidewalks.

These upgrades will not only improve the experience for pedestrians and drivers, but it also benefits drainage and storm sewer collection. Small modifications to each driveway will be required and this will be discussed with each homeowner during the construction period.

During the work, heavy equipment will be periodically entering and exiting the work area.  We ask that you remain conscientious of this equipment and that you keep an eye on younger children and pets to avoid any accidents. Traffic on Caplin Road will be closed to thru traffic, but residents will remain open to residents.

The work is anticipated to be completed by early September 2021.

We recognize that the planned work will be an inconvenience, and your patience during these upgrades is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions concerning this subject, please feel free to contact us at Capital and Infrastructure Tel: (418) 788-3022.

Sincerely,

Listuguj Mi’Gmaq Government

A Message to our Community

Last night a devastating fire swept the Saint-Anne’s Church which resulted in the damage of the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat Headquarters and loss of the Mawiomi Treatment Center, Listuguj Powwow Headquarters, Saint-Anne’s Rectory and Chapel.

“Today the ripple effect of the fire is being felt in the community and beyond, with many experiencing grief and mourning, while coping with what seems truly unbelievable. The impacts of this once in a lifetime event will be felt long after the smoke and smoldering embers are gone. In the coming days we hope that people will continue to find ways to support one another while we process the emotions and reality of this devastating loss.” – Chief Darcy Gray

The Listuguj Fire Department (LFD) and Listuguj Police Department (LPD) coordinated efforts with our regional neighbors to maintain the fire and prevent spread to surrounding homes and LMG buildings.

“Our region has faced many challenges throughout the pandemic, but one thing remains the same is that in times of great need, we pull together as a region, and help one another.” – Councillor Ali Barnaby, Intergovernmental Relations file holder

We want to acknowledge the LFD, LPD, LMG Capital and Infrastructure, Service de Sécurité Incendie de Pointe-à-la-Croix, Campbellton Fire Department and Hydro Quebec, for their tireless work and collaborative efforts in managing the fire.
