Listuguj Community Health Services PSA

The Listuguj Community Health Services would like to announce that the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), in partnership with Health Canada, has hired Kahui Tautoko Consulting Ltd., based in Vancouver, British Columbia, to conduct a National review of the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program. The benefits being reviewed are:

  • Medical Transportation
  • Dental
  • Pharmacy (Medications)
  • Medical Supplies & Equipment

The community of Listuguj has been selected as one of the 5 sites for the Quebec Region. The Health Center will be hosting the consulting group hired by the AFN to conduct this review at our Bingo Hall on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016.

We invite all community members who have used these programs to come and share their experiences with these consultants. We’re all looking for answers to questions like:

“Why is there a limit on diabetic test strips?”

“Why do I have to wait 8 years before I can get new dentures?”

“Why is it such a problem getting braces for my kids?”

“How come my vitamins aren’t covered?”

“How come Medical Transportation can’t pick me up because I live in Campbellton, NB? I’m a community member!”

Our goal is to give them the Listuguj perspective on the problems we have with these service areas. Our hope is that they have a better understanding of the improvements needed for these services.

Come, join us on Tuesday, May 17th at the Listuguj Bingo Hall beginning at 9:00am to have your voice heard on the Non-Insured Health Benefits Program.

Prizes will be drawn, and refreshments will be served.

For more information please contact Listuguj Community Health Services at 418-788-2155.

Letter to Campbellton Regional Hospital

Dear Mr. Lanteigne,

I am writing to you today on behalf of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government because of a number of very concerning issues we have with Campbellton Regional Hospital. I would like to raise and speak to these issues with you and the hospital board so we can work collaboratively to address them. I understand your board will be meeting on March 1, 2016 in Bathurst and I would like to be added to your meeting agenda and attend with my CEO Paul Stanley.

Over the past few weeks, I have heard several disturbing stories of discrimination and unprofessional behavior on the part of your hospital staff members towards our Listiguj First Nation members.

In one incident, a receptionist at the hospital said she would not provide drugs to one of our members and made disparaging remarks by insinuating the individual would abuse these drugs. This person had no drug convictions or addictions whatsoever.

In a more recent incident, a mother visited the hospital with her toddler. After giving some medication to the child, the physician on call gave the girl a sticker. The sticker appears to have been from a movie, but what was written on the sticker was, “Greetings, Native Savages.” This is unacceptable, insensitive and was very upsetting to this child’s mother, who only noticed the sticker after she arrived home in Listuguj. This level of insensitivity points to a dearth of cultural competency and cultural safety at your hospital.

Unfortunately, we do have other stories that point to discriminatory, even racist attitudes of some hospital staff towards our members.

As you are aware, Campbellton Regional Hospital is the nearest major health centre to Listuguj. Our members are visiting on a daily basis. We will not tolerate ignorant or unprofessional attitudes. We want all of our members to be respected and to feel welcome when they come to your hospital. We would welcome an opportunity to meet with you to ensure incidents like these do not happen in the future.

In many other regions across Canada, hospitals have worked closely with neighbouring First Nations to develop services and programs to meet the needs of Indigenous patients. We believe now is the time to develop respectful initiatives that will benefit the Campbellton Regional Hospital and respect Indigenous patients.

I look forward to speaking with you further. I will be following up this letter with a phone call to you in the next week.

LMG Signs Trust Agreement; contains important details for eligible Listuguj members under 18 years of age

January 18, 2016 (Montreal, Quebec) – Chief Scott Martin and a representative from the Royal Trust Company signed a Trust Agreement today that provides the details and process for handling the remaining funds provided to LMG as part of the Settlement Agreement.

“Listuguj members gave Chief and Council direction to set up this Trust. The Trust will ensure that we have the funds so that all members eligible for a PCD will be paid and it also sets out some important rules regarding the Trust,” said Chief Scott Martin.

As ratified by community members, $60 million from the Settlement Agreement is currently being distributed to all Listuguj members who were alive and a member as of April 29, 2015. This Trust Agreement provides details regarding the remaining money that is owed to Listuguj members who have not yet applied for their PCD as well as for those qualifying members who are not yet 18 years of age.

This money is placed in what is called the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Claims Settlement Minors Trust, which is arms-length from Chief and Council and administered by an independent Trustee (the Royal Trust Company). There are two accounts in the Trust; one for adults and one for minors.

There are some rules regarding how minors will be paid once they turn 18, among others:

  • The PCD is $14,951.41 but there will also be an amount to cover inflation and a 2% return adjustment compounded annually until the member turns 18 and applies for the PCD
  • PCD payments will be made on a quarterly basis; January 31st, April 15th, July 15th, and October 15th of each year

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government will release the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Settlement Minors Trust Agreement after it is registered at the Registry Office in the days to follow.

For more information on the Trust, please contact:

Listuguj Management Action Plan (MAP) Progress

AANDC has done a quarterly report on the LMG and it’s implementation of it’s Management Action Plan (MAP) and the results are positive.

The LMG had decreased it’s working capital deficit by a significant amount.

The document from AANDC can be found here:

Even though AANDC will no longer be checking on our finances, the LMG will continue to maintain the best practices possible to ensure that we keep moving forward in a positive direction.
