Confirmed Case of COVID-19 at the IGA in New Richmond

It was recently announced that one employee of the IGA grocery store in New Richmond has tested positive for COVID-19. If you or a family member you live with shopped at this location between April 9th and 16th, it is important that you closely monitor your health and self-isolate for 14 days. If you experience symptoms of cough, fever, difficulty breathing or have lost your sense of smell, please call 1-877-644-4545 for further instruction.

An investigation is underway to determine who the employee would have had significant contact with which would include being within two meters of each other for at least 15 minutes. Other interactions would be classified as low risk. However, it is paramount that we remain vigilant and follow all health and safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Listuguj.

Please stay home as much as possible as this is the safest way to protect yourself, your family and the community.

LMG Closure Extended

On April 6, 2020, the Listuguj Chief and Council declared a State of Emergency for the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government (LMG). This activated additional support for our government to implement the Emergency Response Plan, including the creation of the unified command. The unified command comprises subject experts with high-level executive management experience. They have been mandated by Council to lead the LMG Emergency Measures Organization (EMO).

It has now been decided that the closure of the LMG will continue for an additional two weeks until Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

We are asking for community members, residents, and LMG employees to continue practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please stay home as much as possible as this is the safest way to protect yourself, your family and the community.

Elder Disbursement

The Listuguj Chief and Council have authorized a one-time disbursement for Elders (65 and older) living on-reserve and within close proximity of Listuguj. This financial support will be issued by cheque and sent by mail this afternoon. On behalf of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government, Chief and Council send warm wishes and encourage everyone to be safe and stay home as much as possible.

Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government Declares State of Emergency

April 6, 2020 – Chief and Council of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government have declared a State of Emergency due to the coronavirus global pandemic (COVID-19). This is a preventative measure our government has activated to enhance our response effort to prevent, reduce and mitigate the spread of the virus to our residents.

This decision was made to protect all community members, especially our most vulnerable: elders, children, and residents with underlying health conditions.

Chief and Council remain committed to the health and safety of our residents. To date, there are no presumed or confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Listuguj. This demonstrates that our strategy thus far has been successful. These additional measures come as a result of the new reality that confirmed cases of COVID-19 exist in surrounding areas.

As a result we will be implementing the following within the next couple of days:

  • Security checkpoints will be established at the bridge intersection and the intersection at the Highway 132 and Riverside West;
  • Entry points at Dundee and Caplin Road will be temporarily closed; and
  • Non-essential travelers will be denied access to the community until further notice.

Listuguj Police Department Update

In an effort to further protect Listugujewaq from potential exposure to Covid-19, the Listuguj Police Department will conduct operations with intercepting of vehicles that are not from the community. Drivers will be turned away if their business in Listuguj is non essential.

Please stay home as much as possible as this is the safest way to protect yourself, your family and the community.

Additional Restrictions to the JC Van Horne Bridge

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government was recently informed that further restrictions have been implemented at the JC Van Horne Bridge. Access is limited to essential personnel, medical appointments and medical emergencies only. Essential services no longer includes access to grocery stores, pharmacies and hardware stores.

This situation is constantly evolving. However, it is clear that crossing the bridge has become problematic due to social distancing efforts by the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick.

We are working diligently with all levels of government to find solutions. More information to come tomorrow.

Community Notice

The Listuguj Chief and Council, in collaboration with senior management, has adopted additional measures to further protect the health and safety of our residents. Monitoring checkpoints will be implemented at four entrance points to the community starting March 31st at 8:00 a.m. for a duration of 48 hours. The Listuguj Fire Department will be stationed at these monitoring checkpoints.

Again, we urge you to please stay at home as much as possible. If you need to travel for essential purposes, identify one person to shop on behalf of several family members. The amount of people going out and interacting in public spaces needs to be reduced for the health and wellbeing of everyone.

Now more than ever, we all have a responsibility in ensuring the health and safety of Listugujewaq – specifically our elders and more vulnerable community members – and the best way to do so is to maintain social distances, practice good hygiene and most importantly stay home.

Community Message

Chief and Council are aware that there are growing concern around non-resident entering our community for non-essential purposes. The health and safety of our residents remains our number one priority. Rest assured, that we are bringing your voice to on-going discussions and working collaboratively with New Brunswick and Quebec around restrictions into the community. This includes the on-going access to essential services and needs as we respond to COVID-19. We would also like to remind everyone that even with the restrictions in place, the key responsibility lies with each and every one of us to do our part to maintain social distance, good hygiene practices, and to stay home and stay safe.

As always, the LMG will continue to provide updates and take action for the safety of our community. Please refer to the LMG website and Social Media pages for the most accurate information.
