Summary of Function:

Under the direction of the Manager of Community Services, the Family Violence Prevention Educator is a direct service position responsible for developing, facilitating, coordinating and implementing prevention and enrichment services targeting at-risk Families, Youth, and Individuals. The Family Violence Prevention Educator is to work to reduce the incidence of violent behavior and abuse in family situations. The Family Violence Prevention Educator works to prevent and address family violence and abuse.

 

Job Duties:

  • Coordinate and facilitate academic and enrichment services for Listuguj
  • Developing and facilitating academic, prevention, enrichment, and life skills curricula for the Community of Listuguj on topics including (but not limited to): Family violence, career preparation, socio-emotional development, life skills, and high school and college preparation, sexual abuse, and addictions referrals.
  • Assist with Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities.
  • Recruiting and coordinating guest speakers when appropriate.
  • Community Engagement: Provide community and school-based education aimed at decreasing the prevalence of sexual and domestic violence.
  • Conducting evidence-based alcohol and other drug prevention curriculum primarily to youth and to adults (as needed).
  • Refer parents/families that are in need of parenting and life skills classes to the appropriate resources.
  • Assisting in building relationships with local schools, parent groups, and surrounding resources.
  • Mobilizing and working collaboratively with local key stakeholders, such as residents, leaders, businesses, schools, churches, parents, youth and other community-based agencies to develop detailed, outcomes-driven plans for each campaign.
  • Assisting in conducting community readiness assessment through asset mapping, data collection and review, surveys and interviews.
  • Developing leadership and organizing skills amongst a diverse group of youth, parents, educators and other community stakeholders in the area of prevention
  • Communicating with a broad audience, including mainstream and ethnic-based media, parents, key community leaders, and local elected officials.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public/Community Health or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of one year of community organizing and/or outreach or Minimum one (1) year experience running a program to serve a population that was impacted by Violence, substance use, low-grades, and other risk factors.
  • Knowledge and understanding of substance use prevention planning including community-based and environmental prevention efforts.
  • Mi’gmaq Language would be an asset
  • Must Submit a Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check
