Following yesterday’s events, the Listuguj Medical Taxi will be closed tomorrow, May 17, 2021. If you go to your appointment, please make sure to get a Medical Attestation along with a Taxi receipt to get reimbursed. Thanking you in advance on this matter.

LMG Closed for Day of Reflection

Out of respect for the families and all those impacted, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government will be closed tomorrow, May 17, 2021 for a day of reflection. Support services will be available to the community as early as this afternoon. More details will be shared soon.

Essential services will continue to operate unless otherwise instructed by their supervisor.

Emergency Response Update – Suspect in Custody

Listuguj, May 15, 2021 – An individual is now in custody following a reported active shooter situation in the community. An active crime investigation is underway and there will be an increased police presence within the community as the investigation continues. Community members are asked to stay clear of the area.

 

Details are limited at this time; however, we can confirm that:

  • The Listuguj Police Department responded to a situation involving an active shooter barricaded at 94 Riverside West.
  • Additional support was requested to assist in the response and in securing the area, to protect those living nearby, and isolate the situation.
  • The suspect surrendered voluntarily and is now in custody.
  • Emergency responders counted two fatalities on-scene.
  • The residence remains an active crime scene and investigation is on-going.

 

“On behalf of myself and Council, our hearts are with you. Our government will continue to make every effort to provide support for those in need through these difficult times. In the coming days, LMG will have services available to those impacted.” says Chief Darcy Gray.

Shooting in Listuguj

Listuguj, May 15, 2021 – The Emergency Measure Organization (EMO) of Listuguj and the Listuguj Police Department announce that a shooting has taken place in the community. The situation is still ongoing. We want to remind people to stay away from the area to allow for emergency services to conduct their response. Do not share live feeds of the situation as it compromises police positions and assessments being conducted.

 

What we know and what we don’t

  • For now, we know that a shooting happened near Micmac Drive and Riverside West.
  • Listuguj Police Department set up a security perimeter.
  • We don’t know yet if and how many people have been injured and if there are any deaths.

Please do not share names of the people you believe were there and do not share photos or live feeds to social media.

Emergency Situation – Micmac Drive and Riverside West

There is an emergency situation in the Micmac Drive and Riverside West area. The police have it under control. The area has been closed off.

All community members, please stay clear of the area.

Call for Tender – Caplin Road Roadway Upgrades

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government has released a call for tender to carry out roadway upgrades on Caplin Road including asphalt, concrete sidewalks and curbs, adjustments of manholes, valve boxes and fire hydrants. The deadline for bid submissions is Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time / 3:00 p.m. Atlantic time.

Listuguj Fishers Catch Blue Lobster

Our Listuguj lobster fishers caught a blue lobster today, May 13, 2021. The chances of catching a blue lobster are 1 in 2,000,000. After taking a few photos of their catch, the crew of the Desert Storm 1 returned it to the water.

Vessel Naming Contest

Help us name our new patrol vessel! This new vessel will support the monitoring and enforcement needs of the Listuguj Rangers and Natural Resources Directorate in the salmon and lobster fisheries.

The winning name will be announced at the Migwite’tm Commemoration Event on June 11, 2021. Send in your suggestions by May 31, 2021 to james.metallicsloan@listuguj.ca and use ‘M81’ in the subject line.

Housing Application – Rapid Housing Program

The Capital and Infrastructure department is happy to announce a Rapid Housing program that will allow for community members in a vulnerable situation to have access to new affordable housing unit rentals. The application process starts May 11th, 2021 and will continue until May  21st 2021 at 2:00 pm.

Applicants will be evaluated and given priority according to criteria fixed by the CMHC and the Listuguj Housing Policy. Please note that the submission of an application does not guarantee a rental to an applicant. Sending a letter to Chief & Council is discouraged and doing so will provide no further impact or influence on an application’s priority.

Main Selection Criteria:

  • Total household revenue of under $35,000 per year, for the last two years,
  • Being in severe housing need, such as but not limited to: experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Water Interruption

There will be a water interruption tonight, May 10th, starting at 10:00 p.m. while the Capital and Infrastructure team perform maintenance at the pumping station. This water interruption will affect the whole community and should last not long than two hours.
