Notice of Appeal – 2020 Listuguj Election
The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government would like to notify the community that we have received notice of an appeal to the Listuguj General Election held on November 7, 2020. The appeal questions the integrity of the vote and, if successful, could impact the results for both Chief and Council.
Within the democratic process, appeals are not uncommon; under the Indian Act, eligible voters and candidates can request an appeal to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) within 45 days after the election. Candidates who ran in the November 7, 2020 general election can anticipate a notice of appeal in the mail if they have not received a letter already.
Whereas Listuguj does not have our own Election Code, the appeal will be handled by the Assistant Deputy Minister of Indigenous Services Canada or another delegated member of the department, as per the Indian Act.
Until the appeal decision is made, business will remain as usual. The Chief and Council’s mandate, obligations and commitments to the community will continue.
