2020 Band Elections Update

As Coronavirus (Covid-19) continued to evolve, and acting in the best interest of safety and wellbeing of the community, Chief and Council rescinded Order in Council 2531—Band Elections June 2020, postponing the band election originally scheduled for June 2020.  With the support of Indigenous Service Canada (ISC) as per the guidelines for cancelling and postponement of elections during Covid-19, it was assured that there would be no Governance-Gap and Chief and Council could continue its mandate, and must specify a new election date within 6 months of the original date of the band election.

On July 29, 2020 Chief and Council approved Order in Council 2563—Listuguj Band Elections 2020. The new date set for the election is November 7th, 2020. Order in Council 2563, also appoints the Michel Poirier as the Electoral Officer and Christine (Tina) Barnaby as Assistant Electoral Officer for Listuguj.

Specific dates identified as per OIC 2563 are:

  • Official Nominations for General Band Election will take place Friday, September 25, 2020.
  • The General Band Election for Chief and Council will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020.

Community Notice – Avoid Large Gatherings

Often at this time of year, an impromptu party (“Lake Fest”) is organized at Qospem (Indian Lake). This event is not sanctioned by the LMG and attendance is entirely at one’s own risk. We do not advise community members and residents to attend as a health and safety plan has not been submitted to the LMG nor approved by LMG.

Nonetheless, should you choose to attend, it is each person’s responsibility to adhere to public health recommendations, maintain proper social distancing and exercise good hygiene. Please be aware that the coronavirus is still very much a concern and that the risk of infection is real. The Listuguj Police Department will increase patrols in the area to provide assistance and direction. Finally, normal rules and conduct, especially in regards to drinking and driving, must be followed.

Community Support for New Brunswick Travel Registration

Starting tomorrow, August 1st, 2020, Listuguj residents travelling to New Brunswick for a day trip will be required to pre-register online at www.gnb.ca/TravelRegistration. This can also be accessed by calling toll free 1-833-948-2800 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Atlantic time). This is an easy process that only takes a few minutes.

Starting this afternoon, July 31st, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government will be offering its services to community members and residents to facilitate this registration process. If you are experiencing difficulties with your registration and require assistance, please contact Christy Metallic, Administrative Support Clerk, at 418-788-2136.

These services will be offered Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you need to travel to New Brunswick during the weekend, we ask that you please contact Christy Metallic during the week to pre-register.

Chief Darcy Responds to Mini Bubble

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is encouraged with the outcome of discussions held between Premier Blaine Higgs and Chief Darcy Gray. Effective August 1, 2020, Listuguj community members and residents will once again be able to reunite with their families, access affordable food options, and access our traditional and ancestral lands.

“Regaining access is a positive first step. I’m happy with the outcome of the discussions held between myself, the Premier and his office over the course of the past few weeks. I’m optimistic that moving forward our governments will continue to work collaboratively on issues that adversely impact Listugujewaq, including access to our traditional and ancestral lands,” says Chief Darcy Gray.

From the outset, our government has been committed to doing things differently. Communications, relationship building and open dialogue is our foundation. We look forward to working collaboratively with the rest of the region, and are encouraged by the dialogue and efforts already happening to ensure a safe transition for our students attending Sugarloaf Senior High School in the Fall.

Important Community Notice

The LMG is taking precautionary measures to ensure the ongoing safety of our staff and clients. All LMG buildings will be closed to visitors until Monday, August 3, 2020. Please note that this will affect the scheduled activities with the Listuguj Youth and Family Centre, including the summer camp due to a reported case in Carleton-sur-mer. At this point in time, there has been no reported cases in Listuguj but those individuals who have been to Carleton are recommended to seek testing. See news article below for more details.

Please note that community members and residents accessing programs and services within LMG buildings must wear a mask. This new measure will be in effect until further notice.

Chief Darcy Gray’s Response to Recent NB Announcement

  

Friday, July 17, 2020 – The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government (LMG) is encouraged by the Premiers’ ongoing discussions surrounding the expansion of the ‘Atlantic Bubble’ and the Government of New Brunswick’s recent announcement of possibly ‘twinning’ with our community. Listuguj community members and residents have been patient and understanding throughout this process. As restrictions begin to lessen, allowing for inter-provincial travel between NB, NS, PEI, and NL, it is time to move on beyond the current restrictions imposed on Listugujewaq and Listuguj residents. We are optimistic that access will be possible as we continue to have no actives cases of COVID-19 within Gespe’gewa’gi. Soon we will be reunited with our families and loved ones once again and be able to access affordable grocery options and essential services across the river.

 

“For each of us, our number one concern has always been the safety of our People. Based on my recent discussions with Premier Higgs, I’m hopeful we can find a way forward. For that to happen, we must be willing to collaborate, have open dialogue and lead with humanity in mind. These are the fundamental principles our ‘new normal’ should be founded on, including recognizing Mi’gmaq inherent rights and rights protected in treaty, as we are the original inhabitants of these lands. Certainly, I’m concerned about the impact these restrictions will have on our relationship with our regional neighbours. Hopefully, from here on, decisions will be made with meaningful consultation, which includes consideration for our needs in accessing our territories. As a region, we cannot afford to turn back the clock on the progress we’ve made together so far,” says Chief Darcy Gray.

Request for Proposal – Healing Arbour

We would like to invite head carpenters to submit a proposal to construct the Healing Arbour near the former Busteed House as shown in the sketches linked below.

The proposal must include the following items:

  1. Price for construction work (Not Including Material) to include the following :
  • Loading and offloading material
  • Construction of post holes for foundation
  • Perform all the carpentry work to complete the work as per the sketch
