Zero Cases of COVID-19 in Listuguj

We are aware of what is occurring across the bridge. LMG is monitoring matters closely. We strongly recommend our residents to avoid travelling to Campbellton, NB, while they work to address their current situation. We will continue to take all steps necessary to protect Listuguj and its residents. In the meantime all residents are asked to continue following safety measures. We will get through this together.

Listuguj Salmon Fisheries 2020

May 27, 2020 – Due to the Covid-19 global pandemic and the consequential restrictions imposed by the Government of New Brunswick, Listuguj has faced unique challenges, including increased economic uncertainty, job losses, store closures and unprecedented difficulty in accessing nutritious foods. This had led to changes to the Listuguj Salmon Fishing Plan 2020 to meet our basic needs.

On May 27, 2020, Chief and Council approved the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nations Fishing Plan – Atlantic Salmon 2020 at a duly convened council meeting. The Listuguj salmon fishery will begin one week earlier on May 27, 2020, and will end July 26, 2020 (St. Anne’s Day). Given Listuguj’s current reality, including lack of access to nutritious foods, due to the province of New Brunswick’s border enforcement, the early salmon fishing season will provide community members with access to traditional foods to meet their basic needs during this crisis.

All Listuguj salmon harvesters are to respect the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nations Fishing Plan – Atlantic Salmon 2020 on the entire Restigouche River watershed and estuary. Please consult the Listuguj Salmon Fishing Plan for more information, including fishing schedule.

For more information, please contact the Listuguj Rangers at 418-788-2222. For media requests, please contact Hilary Barnaby, Acting Communications Manager, at hilary.barnaby@listuguj.ca.

Health Notice – Wearing Masks During Medical Appointments

Gaspé, Tuesday May 26th, 2020 – In order to ensure safety and security within the facilities of the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) de la Gaspésie, the population is now asked to wear masks, or homemade masks, during their visits to the CLSCs, hospitals or clinics.

Masks are a measure to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus by people who do not have symptoms. It is therefore strongly recommended that the people wear them when presenting for care and services.

It is important to note some basic recommendations about homemade masks:

  • Wash it daily;
  • Remove it by the elastic bands;
  • Put it in a closed bag when it is removed, before returning

Remember that hand washing is the first measure to protect against infections, therefore it is important to wash your hands regularly, in addition to respecting social distancing (2 metres), when possible.

If a person has symptoms (cough, fever, difficulty breathing, sore throat or loss of taste and smell), or is positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting screening results, they should not go to their medical appointment and must call 1 877 644-4545.

AGS Breaks Ground on New Expansion

The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School broke ground on the new expansion this morning Tuesday, May 26th, 2020. The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is incredibly proud and grateful for all those involved in bringing this project to life.

The new expansion will include a cafetorium, music room, a room for ceremony, and an expanded gymnasium. It will cost approximately $8.5M and is currently fully funded by Indigenous Services Canada. Minister Marc Miller joined us via his Facebook live stream to help announce this exciting contribution. The site preparation has begun, and construction is expected to be complete by summer 2021.

Local businesswoman Victoria LaBillois was the MC for the event which was attended by teachers and those involved in the project. The event was purposefully kept small to allow for social distancing. Community members were able to join the celebration via Facebook Live.

Chief Darcy Gray spoke about how the groundbreaking was the culmination of many years of hard work and collaboration.

Mi’gmaw immersion teacher, Maddie Metallic, spoke on her experiences as a student at AGS and her transition to becoming a teacher. She is thrilled to see how Mi’gmaq identity among students has flourished over the years which the Alaqsite’w Gitpu School has helped foster.

Elder Joe Wilmot conducted the first part of his remarks in the Mi’gmaw, and spoke about the importance of revitalizing the language.

AGS Principal Jeff Grass recounted his experience moving into the current school building 25 years ago, and spoke optimistically about the changes that will accompany the expansion. He commented that the expansion does not reflect reconciliation in education, but rather equity in education because this project simply brings to AGS the resources that other schools have always had.

Director of Listuguj Education, Training, and Employment Lorna Sook shared the Directorate’s vision for a Mi’gmaq immersion school, a high school, and post-secondary institutions.

The event concluded with Director of Capital and Infrastructure, Jody Mitchell turning over the sod to signify the next step in the project.

Community Notice Regarding DFO

On Friday, May 22, 2020, two officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans entered Listuguj uninvited. Checkpoint supervisor Paul Jacques swiftly dealt with the incident, and the officers were escorted out of the community. This incident was then followed up by the Director of Public Security, Peter Arsenault, who informed the DFO officers of our protocols regarding access to Listuguj, which includes consent from the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government. At no point was permission granted by our Chief and Council or members of our administration. On behalf of the LMG, we would like to thank our staff for their professionalism and for their on-going efforts to ensure the protection of our inherent rights.

Community Notice from Listuguj Public Security

The fire danger level on the SOPFEU forest fire index is currently EXTREME in our region. Listuguj Public Security will continue to monitor as OPEN Fire Ban in our region is in effect.
At this time, we ask all community members to comply and exercise great restraint and vigilance.

Community Notice – General Contractors

As the warmer weather approaches, we realize a number of homeowners will begin making general repairs to their homes. To minimize the potential spread of COVID-19, contractors from outside of Listuguj will not be permitted entry into the community. However, this does not apply, if you are unable to find a contractor to suit your needs in the event of an emergency.

All community members are encouraged to find contract workers within Listuguj, to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19. If you require immediate repairs (i.e. emergency amenities like plumbing or electrical) and are unable to find a contractor within our own community hire as needed subcontractors from low risk areas within Quebec or New Brunswick.

When arranging for repair work on your own home, here are the steps we ask that you take:

  1. Hire a local contractor.
  2. If you have to hire an outside contractor, the following guidelines must be followed:
    • Choose a contractor from a low risk area;
    • Only (1) contractor is allowed to work at a time;
  3. Minimise your contact with the contractor, and try to avoid the contractor going into your house unless the work requires it;
  4. The contractor crew should be no more than (4) workers for the whole project and they must comply with LMG safety regulations, in addition to, federal or provincial regulations;
  5. Contact Ali Barnaby at the Executive Office by calling 418-788-2136 or via email at ali.barnaby@listuguj.ca to provide the name of your contractor and the dates they will require access to the community.
