The Natural Resources Directorate would like to share information with the community about the upcoming fall lobster fishing season.

21B-West Fishing Plan Update

The Natural Resources Directorate has drafted a fishing plan for a proposed fishery in an area West of 21B. To date, this fishing plan has not been approved.

The NRD is committed to further enhancing of our capacity to govern our own fishery by extending the 21B into the Listuguj Lobster Law framework, which also includes:

  • Ongoing community engagement to ensure the plan reflects community vision.
  • Working with Public Security Directorate and Rangers to ensure community members remain safe on the water in any future 21B-west fishery.
  • Conduct science and community knowledge research to monitor lobster health.
  • Continuing negotiations with Fisheries and Ocean Canada via the Rights Reconciliation Agreement for the benefit of Listuguj.

In the event of an after-hour youth protection emergency, community members may call Youth Protection Services for out-of-province calls or cellular calls 418-368-1803 OR 1-800-463-0629 Evenings/Weekends. Additional contacts: emergency calls may be made during the day at 1-800-463-4225.

Lobster Fishing Plan

The Natural Resources Directorate of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is currently developing a Lobster Fishing Plan for a new fishing Area.
The objectives of this fishing plan are to:
• Ensure a lobster fishery by community members is beneficial and done safely, while respecting the lobster and the needs of future generations.
• Support community sustenance needs by providing additional access to Lobster.
• Balance community rights with responsibilities to the territory, lobster, and each other.
• Exercise community authority under Listuguj Lobster Law.
• Encourage a co-operative approach to governance and management approach by working with Treaty partners (Canada via Fisheries and Oceans Canada) to respect Lobster and keep community members safe.

Physician/RAMQ Medicare Cards

 

The Listuguj Community Health Services, is asking community members to call the Health Centre if you, or anyone in your household, does NOT have a physician at the present time.

To secure a Doctor for our community, we need to know how many people are without a physician.

Note, the physician will not see clients without an updated RAMQ Medicare Card.

Please call us at the Health Centre, 418-788-2155 during regular business hours and ask to speak to Tasha Doiron who will be compiling this important information.

LMG’s New Director of Education

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is pleased to announce our new Director of Education, Michael James (Mickey) Isaac Jr..

Michael has a very broad academic and employment history, serving the community as a Police Officer, a member of the Civic Service in Ottawa, a Mi’gmaq Consultant with the Department of Education of Nova Scotia, a principal, and a Director Research for the Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn.

 

Michael has taken on the role of Director as of today, July 17th, and will provide his expertise and support to the Listuguj Education, Training, and Employment directorate.
