Summary of Function:

Under the direct supervision of the Sugarloaf Senior High School Principal and Enhancement Manager, the Mi’gmaq Language and Culture Instructor is responsible for developing and delivering engaging, culturally relevant Mi’gmaq language and culture programming to high school students. The Instructor will support students in developing their Mi’gmaq language skills while fostering a strong understanding and appreciation of Mi’gmaq culture, history, traditions, and community.

Job Duties:

  • Adhere to applicable New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Anglophone and Francophone District, Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government, Sugarloaf Senior High School Faculty Handbook, and school policies and procedures, including Policies 701 and 703.
  • Incorporate a First Nations perspective into classroom activities, instruction, and programming, particularly where learning outcomes directly impact First Nations students and/or the community.
  • Deliver Mi’gmaq language and culture instruction in accordance with the approved curriculum and learning objectives.
  • Develop and prepare engaging lesson plans, instructional materials, activities, and resources appropriate to students’ varying learning needs and language proficiency levels.
  • Provide individualized instruction, encouragement, and support to students to promote language acquisition and academic progress.
  • Create an engaging, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that promotes respect, cultural understanding, and appreciation.
  • Maintain effective classroom management and establish a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Mi’gmaq Language and Culture classroom.
  • Prepare, administer, mark, and maintain records of tests, assignments, and other student assessments.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, including oral and conversational Mi’gmaq language skills, and communicate results with students, parents/guardians, and school administration as appropriate.
  • Differentiate instructions to accommodate various learning styles, abilities, language levels, and individual student needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely daily attendance records.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Enhancement Manager regarding student progress, programming, and other relevant classroom activities.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops as required.
  • Develop and implement culturally relevant programming that reflects Mi’gmaq culture, traditions, knowledge, and community priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Mi’gmaq Cultural Coordinator to support and enhance cultural programming and activities.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, agencies, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, guest speakers, and other external resources to facilitate cultural learning opportunities, events, and activities within the classroom and school.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Mi’gmaq students and contribute to a school environment that supports cultural identity, belonging, and student success.
  • Follow the direction and guidance of the Sugarloaf Senior High School Principal and Enhancement Manager.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Valid Teacher’s Certificate would be considered an asset; a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience is preferred.
  • Fluent in the Mi’gmaq language is required.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Mi’gmaq culture, traditions, history, community, needs, and aspirations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver culturally relevant and engaging instruction.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting Mi’gmaq students and promoting cultural understanding and respect within the school community.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to complying with New Brunswick Policies 701 and 703.
  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
