Organization:

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Development Centre (LMDC) is seeking to employ a Mi’gmaq Immersion Educational Assistant. The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Development Centre aims to develop an independent, skilled Mi’gmaq Labour Force through employment and training initiatives by affirming Mi’gmaq values aimed to foster relationships with self, others and the environment.

Purpose of the Position:

The Mi’gmaq Immersion Educational Assistant provides support services to students and teachers in a school setting to meet curricular outcomes. The duties of the Mi’gmaq Immersion Educational Assistant will vary depending upon the needs of student(s).

Job Description:

Under the Supervision of the Adult Mi’gmaq Immersion Lead Instructor, the Mi’gmaq Immersion Educational Assistant is responsible for assisting students and educators in support of LMDC’s vision of Mi’gmaw language revitalization. They will assist in developing their own language skills while supporting the growth of all students through a strength and interest based approach to learning.

Job Duties:

  • Accompany and supervise students during all group outings.
  • Implements specific academic techniques, strategies and appropriate language as discussed and/or demonstrated.
  • Gathers relevant information through working with student or students to provide feedback into the planning process.
  • Produce materials and implements strategies to accommodate individual learner needs/styles.
  • Assists with development of instructional learning resources.
  • Assists students with learning activities and/or independent study projects developed by teacher/team.
  • Supports learning and skill development activities in worksite and community-based settings.
  • Supports and works within the classroom management structure and expectations of students as outlined by the teacher.
  • Observes and documents learner strengths, achievements, and needs through daily learning activities.
  • Assists in the collection of data for the purpose of evaluating student progress.
  • Documents and shares workplace concerns.
  • Reviews and monitors that policies are being implemented.
  • Shares information.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Facilitates student learning individually and in small groups.

 

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Mi’gmaw language, reading and writing
  • Understanding of cultural environment.
  • Accomplished a Grade 12 diploma from a provincially recognized institution or equivalent.
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Proficiency in the operation of computers, word processing applications and additional software.
  • Good written and oral Mi’gmaq communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team player.
  • Basic organizational skills and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing situations.
  • Ability to communicate/interact with varied personalities.
