Summary of Function:

The Grade 4 English Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, inclusive, and culturally responsive instruction to Grade 4 students at Alaqsite’w Gitpu School. The Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering instruction in all Grade 4 subject areas in the English language, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and other subjects as assigned.

Working under the supervision of the AGS Principal and in collaboration with school staff, the Teacher will support students in achieving academic, social, emotional, and personal development goals. The Teacher will create a positive and respectful classroom environment that recognizes and incorporates Mi’gmaq culture, language, traditions, and community values into learning wherever appropriate.

Job Duties:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver developmentally appropriate lessons and learning activities for Grade 4 students.
  • Teach all assigned Grade 4 subject areas in English, including but not limited to: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Other subjects as assigned by the principal.
  • Follow the curriculum, learning outcomes, standards, policies, and educational expectations established by the Listuguj Education Directorate and Alaqsite’w Gitpu School.
  • Develop daily, weekly, and long-term instructional plans that meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.
  • Create an inclusive, respectful, safe, and positive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and learning.
  • Incorporate Mi’gmaq culture, history, traditions, perspectives, and community knowledge into classroom instruction where appropriate.
  • Support and encourage students’ academic, social, emotional, and personal development.
  • Differentiate instruction and learning activities to accommodate students with varying abilities, learning styles, and educational needs.
  • Develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Assess student learning through observations, assignments, tests, projects, and other appropriate assessment methods.
  • Monitor and document student progress and provide timely feedback to students and parents/guardians.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, attendance records, assessment information, and other documentation as required.
  • Identify students who may require additional academic, behavioral, or learning support and work collaboratively with school-based support staff to address their needs.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and other student support plans, where applicable.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent recognized teaching qualification.
  • Valid Teaching Certificate/License.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification, or willingness to obtain.
