Summary of Function:

Reporting to the Lead Hand, the Log Loader Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment to support the daily operations of the LMG Chipper Team. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a continuous flow of logs to the debarker and chipper throughout each shift while ensuring the safe loading, unloading, and handling of timber.

The Log Loader Operator is responsible for operating a heavy log loader and must possess practical knowledge of other heavy equipment, including trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, and similar machinery, as required. The incumbent is also responsible for inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, and securing equipment in accordance with applicable legislation, organizational policies, and established operating procedures to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Job Duties:

  • Operate hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and any other mechanical components required for the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
  • Conduct pre-operational and post-operational inspections to ensure the log loader is in safe working condition and report any deficiencies promptly.
  • Safely load logs onto trailers and unload them into the debarker for chipping, sourcing logs from the wood yard or log trucks as required.
  • Assist with the replacement of chipper knives and removal, repair, and maintenance of chipper discs.
  • Operate heavy machinery safely and efficiently while adhering to established operating procedures and safety standards.
  • Comply with all workplace health and safety policies, regulations, and legislative requirements.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, incidents, accidents, or injuries to the Lead Hand or Supervisor.
  • Assist in diagnosing mechanical issues and identifying defects in heavy equipment.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, and completing minor repairs to ensure equipment remains in optimal operating condition.
  • Accurately complete and maintain required documentation, may include vehicle inspections, daily logs, hours of service, equipment inspection reports, and delivery records.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment as operational needs require.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and operational standards of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government (LMG), LMG Chipping Operations, AV Cell, and any other applicable partners or regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the efficient operation of the chipping facility.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent is required.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Certification or related training is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, including log loaders, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, or similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment safety, maintenance, and safe-operating procedures.
  • Defensive Driving Certification and/or Millwright experience are considered assets.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening is required.
