The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government would like to engage community members to obtain recommendations in regards to the future use of the “Busteed House”.
It is currently being proposed that the house be transformed into a place of healing. Some ideas proposed:
- a place people with addictions can go to talk (a safe haven),
- a place where elders and traditionalists who come to community for ceremony have a place to stay, and/or
- a place to make traditional medicine.
The purpose of this proposal would be to make this house, which has had a long-standing negative stigma with our community, a positive space for healing and well-being.
Over the course of the last few years, the grounds have been blessed more than once and traditional healing practices have been taking place on a regular basis. We wish to continue these activities to make the place that has been such a negative in our history a positive for our community moving forward.
Currently, there have been some discussions of having funding dollars given to Listuguj to retrofit the building to our needs from the Ministère de la culture et des communications. We simply need a community supported plan to move forward.
This is just a preliminary idea. We wish to engage the community and gather your thoughts.
There will be a community meeting at the Elders Lodge on Saturday, January 18th, starting at 5:00 p.m. to give ideas and have a discussion. A spaghetti dinner will be served.
This gathering will also be live streamed for members living out of the community.
