Summary of Function:

Under the direction of the Post-Secondary Manager, the Support Counsellor provides comprehensive frontline support services to high school and post-secondary students. The Support Counsellor is responsible for supporting students in navigating academic, personal, financial, and career-related challenges while fostering strong relationships with students, families, schools, and post-secondary institutions.

The role combines direct student support, outreach, coordination, and administrative responsibilities to ensure students receive timely, culturally responsive, and holistic services. The incumbent will monitor student progress, identify emerging concerns, and communicate regularly with the Post-Secondary Manager regarding student needs and service delivery.

Job Duties:

  • Provide frontline support services to students by identifying, assessing, and assisting with academic, personal, financial, and career-related challenges.
  • Conduct structured support sessions and informal drop-in consultations.
  • Assess student needs and coordinate appropriate referrals for mental health services, learning supports, financial assistance, or academic accommodations.
  • Develop individualized support plans where appropriate and monitor student progress.
  • Ensure timely and professional referrals to specialized services when required.
  • Conduct regular student visits at high schools and post-secondary institutions.
  • Maintain monthly outreach and follow-up with supported students.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with Indigenous liaisons, academic advisors, and student support services at colleges and universities.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with the Enhancement Team.
  • Facilitate information sessions for students and families on post-secondary pathways and supports.
  • Work one evening per week, as required, to accommodate student needs and programming.
  • Assist in organizing workshops, events, and information sessions related to school applications, course registration, scholarships and bursaries, student loans and financial planning.
  • Research, compile, and distribute information on bursaries, scholarships, funding programs, and financial aid opportunities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or a related field or relevant credentials and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic counselling, student support, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality student-centered services.
  • Knowledge of post-secondary systems, financial aid processes, and student support services.
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
