Summary of Function:
The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Mi’gmaq Core Language Teacher to deliver high-quality instruction in the Mi’gmaq language. This role is central to preserving, revitalizing, and promoting the Mi’gmaq language and culture among students. The ideal candidate is a fluent-speaker or advanced learner of Mi’gmaq with a strong commitment to Indigenous education and language reclamation.
Job Duties:
· Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management, executives and visitors at all times.
· Teach Mi’gmaq language to Middle School students in accordance with curriculum standards and Alaqsite’w Gitpu School goals.
· Incorporate traditional knowledge, oral storytelling, and cultural teachings into language instruction.
· Develop culturally appropriate lesson plans, learning materials and assessments.
· Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
· Collaborate with Elders, language speakers, and community members to enrich language and cultural learning.
· Participate in professional development related to Indigenous pedagogy, language teaching, and curriculum development.
· Maintain communication with parents/guardians, school staff, and community partners regarding student progress.
· Promote the use of Mi’gmaq language beyond the classroom, encouraging everyday use within the school and community.
· Using teaching methods, cultural practices, procedures, and techniques appropriate to learners.
· Attend all staff meetings and Parent/Teacher and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) team meetings.
· Teach students using a First Nations lens aligned with the Mi’gmaq Education Standards.
· Communicate and collaborate with Intervention Workers and/or Educational Assistants and/or Behavior Interventionists, etc.
Requirements:
· Fluency in or advanced proficiency in the Mi’gmaq language.
· Minimum of 2-years’ experience in a related field.
· Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community.
· Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations.
· Ability to pass a criminal background/Vulnerable Sector check.
