Summary of Function:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Casual/On-Call Custodian/Watchman is responsible for supporting the cleanliness, safety, security, and general upkeep of the Waqatasg Elder’s Care Facility. The position assists with maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and welcoming environment for residents, staff, visitors, and volunteers.

The Custodian/Watchman will perform routine custodial duties, assist with general facility and grounds upkeep, monitor building conditions, identify and report maintenance concerns, and respond appropriately to situations that may arise during their shift. When assigned to Watchman duties, the employee is responsible for monitoring the facility, maintaining security and safety awareness, and providing immediate assistance in accordance with established procedures.

Job Duties:

• Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and general appearance of the facility, including common areas, washrooms, entrances, and other assigned areas.
• Perform routine custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, garbage removal, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
• Assist with maintaining the building, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Conduct routine inspections of the facility and report maintenance, safety, security, or equipment concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Perform basic preventative maintenance and minor upkeep duties as directed and within the scope of the position.
• Assist with scheduled weekly, monthly, and annual preventative maintenance activities for facility systems and equipment.
• Monitor building conditions, including doors, windows, lighting, heating, and other facility systems, and report concerns as required.
• Complete assigned groundskeeping duties, including seasonal upkeep and snow/ice removal when required.
• Follow established health, safety, sanitation, infection prevention, and emergency procedures.
• When assigned Watchman duties, monitor the facility and grounds for unusual activity, safety concerns, hazards, or other issues requiring attention.
• Ensure exterior doors and other designated areas are appropriately secured during Watchman shifts.
• Provide immediate assistance and respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, and urgent situations occurring within the facility.
• Document emergencies and significant incidents occurring during the shift and complete required incident reports once the immediate emergency has been addressed.
• Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy, dignity, and personal space of residents at all times.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act legislation and regulations.
• Knowledge of the Mi’gmaq language and culture is considered an asset.
• Must provide a Criminal Background/Vulnerable Sector Check.
