Summary of Function:
The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Educational Assistant (EA) who will be responsible for providing academic and behavioral support services to students in a school setting. The duties of an EA will vary depending upon the needs of the student(s). The incumbent will work collaboratively with teachers to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The Educational Assistant will report to the Methods and Resource Coordinator.
Job Duties:
- Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management, executives and visitors at all times.
- Facilitates student learning both individually and with small groups of students.
- Supports learning and skill development in all subject areas.
- Assists students with learning activities and/or independent study projects developed by teacher/team.
- Supports and works within the classroom management structure, discipline plan and expectations of students as outlined by the teacher.
- As required, attend student-specific support team meetings.
- Follows guidelines followed by AGS to protect the safety and well-being of children, youth and staff.
- Supports occupational and physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, vision and hearing-impaired specialists and nurses in the delivery of required services.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Desire and ability to work in a Mi’gmaq school setting that prioritizes Mi’gmaw worldviews, knowledge and cultural values.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team player.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Basic organizational skills and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing situations.
- Other related duties, assigned by immediate supervisor.
Requirements:
- Post-secondary courses in programs such as Early Childhood Development, Educational Assistant diploma, Early Childhood Education diploma, Youth Worker, Rehabilitation Worker, or equivalent post-secondary courses in a related field from a recognized institution and/or related experience is required.
- Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required.
- Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations.
- Mi’gmaq/French language is considered an asset.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification or must be willing to take training.
- Must provide a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check.
- In accordance with LMG Policy, priority consideration will be given first to qualified Listuguj Mi’gmaq applicants, followed by qualified applicants from other First Nation communities, and then other qualified candidates.
