Summary of Function:
The Manager of Special Education provides system-level leadership and oversight of Special Education programs across the Alaqsite’w Gitpu School. This role focuses on strategic planning, policy development, compliance, resource allocation, and ensuring high quality services for students with exceptional needs. The Manager works closely with the Methods and Resources Coordinator, school leadership, and external agencies to ensure that services are effective, equitable, and aligned with provincial and board mandates.
Job Duties:
- Coordinates and leads weekly Special Education Team meetings.
- Research challenges faced by students with special needs and developing reports outlining infrastructure and training-based solutions.
- Prepare program and client reports as required.
- Responsible for the Special Education yearly proposal and final reports.
- Assist the Vice Principal in the preparation of the annual budget, and operation plan for Special Education.
- Supervises all Special Education Staff (Methods and Resources Teachers and Support Staff under Jordan’s Principle).
- Conducts Performance Appraisals with all Special Education Staff.
- Ensures appropriate services are being delivered to special needs students.
- Collaborates with and supervises the services of school or visiting professionals and other community/outside agencies related to program service delivery.
- Develop and implement monitoring procedures to ensure that special education policies are being followed, planned special education services are being provided and that each IEP is being updated and evaluated on a regular basis.
- Participates in the recruitment of professional services and submits funding requests to Jordan’s Principle.
- Plan professional development opportunities for school staff focused on exceptional learners and RTI.
- Ensures appropriate behaviour intervention plans and supports are developed, implemented, and monitored for students requiring behavioural support.

Requirements:
- Bachelor of Education Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field is required.
- Certificate in Special Education or a related specialization is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in Special Education or a related educational setting.
- Experience in a management or leadership role is preferred.
- Ability to pass a Criminal Background/Vulnerable Sector Check.
- In accordance with LMG Policy, priority consideration will be given first to qualified Listuguj Mi’gmaq applicants, followed by qualified applicants from other First Nation communities, and then other qualified candidates.
