Summary of Function:
The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is seeking to employ an energetic, self-motivated person as First Nation Education Assistant at Sugarloaf Senior High School. The First Nation Education Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Enhancement Methods & Resource Educator. As a Jordan’s Principle Educational Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, administrators, and students to provide individualized support and facilitate the inclusion of First Nation students with diverse learning needs. Your role will involve fostering a positive learning environment and implementing strategies to promote the academic, social, and emotional growth of students.
Job Duties:
- Adhere to SSHS guidelines and policies (LMG policies, NB District guidelines, SSHS Faculty Handbook, Policy 701, Policy 703)
- Take direction from the Enhancement Methods & Resource Educator (EST-R Enhancement)
- Take direction from classroom educators to best serve students’ needs
- Provide individualized or small group mentoring and supervision to Mi’gmaq student(s) on PLPs using various strategies and tools aimed at assisting them in attaining their educational goals
- Provide direct support to students in the classroom including assistance with assignments, note taking, assessments, and any other educational task.
- Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers, resource staff, and administration to best serve students’ intervention plan for success
- Actively participate in meetings with Listuguj Enhancement team, and SSHS staff
- Meet with EST-R on a regular basis to provide updates on student’s performance and to determine any solutions to help students achieve success
- Demonstrate strong communication skills with teachers, resource, support personnel, school administrators, and students
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills
- Motivate student(s) in regards to their academics
- Assist in the management of behaviour and emotional regulation challenges, implementing strategies outlined in student’(s) PLPs
- Assist student(s) in establishing routines, organizational skills, and time management skills
- Consult with Transition/Attendance Intervener and Native Guidance Counsellor to discuss students’ performance & attendance as needed to best serve the students’ needs.
- Carry out teacher directed activities to reach the student’s established goals
- Accompany and supervise students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centers, and on field trips
- Other related responsibilities may be assigned from time to time as they become necessary to the success of the student
- Provide weekly observation reports to Enhancement Methods and Resource Educator
Requirements:
- Education and /or Experience: College Degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent experience in related field
- Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community
- Act in the capacity of a positive role model for all Mi’gmaq students
- Participate and follow New Brunswick’s Policy 701, Policy 703
- Must provide a clear Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check
- Must have sufficient Mathematics, Language Arts and Technology proficiency to write, revise, and edit using computer applications for high school level
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations
