Summary of Function:

The Waqatasg Cultural and Language Coordinator is accountable for the overall cultural, language, social, recreational, and volunteer programming for the Waqatasg Elder’s Care Facility. This includes life enrichment programs and activities that meet the interests of the residents; organization and planning special events; public relations with residents, families, staff, and management; the recruitment and utilization of volunteers; fundraising; advertising and promotion of recreation programming. There may be local travel required.

Job Duties:

  • Coordinate the work required to obtain and maintain ‘Accredited’ status through Accreditation Canada.
  • Demonstrate planning that indicates a genuine understanding and interest for individual emotional, spiritual, cultural, social, and recreational needs and abilities.
  • Direct supervision of volunteers and residents participating in activities.
  • Provide verbal and instructions to residents, staff and volunteers regarding activity schedules, job assignments, special requirements, professionalism and conduct, security/safety precautions needed, etc.
  • Ensure all programming / activities are delivered in a consistent and safe manner for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Develop and promote positive communication with residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ensure that within the department, residents’ dignity and privacy are always maintained.
  • The individual in this position is required to follow any other instructions and perform any other duties requested by the Waqatasg Administrator.
  • Coordinate Cultural and Language department staff meetings, in-services, and other necessary training sessions.
  • Attending Waqatasg staff meetings, in-services, and other necessary training sessions.
  • Oversee the orientation and training of new Cultural and Language volunteers.
  • Promotes a positive team spirit within the department.
  • Follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, residents, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Ability to develop budgets and schedules to accommodate everyday needs and contingencies for unforeseen circumstances (personnel, supplies, equipment malfunction, etc.).

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma desired.
  • Related educational background and experience.
  • Proficiency in the Mi’gmaq Language and Culture is desirable.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
