Contract for Services
The Natural Resource Directorate is looking to contract the services of a fishing boat Captain to assist various lobster science projects and to fish lobster during the 2022 fall 21B lobster season.
Summary
Under the supervision of the Fisheries Manager, the Captain manages and drives the fishing vessel, the LISTUGUJ 1. They are responsible for all operations aboard: preparing the vessel, searching for fish, fishing and carrying out a follow up of activities thereafter. They are responsible for all aspects related to nautical safety.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Science Projects:
- Commands and drives the vessel in order to catch fish and other marine animal-life
- Work with biologists or science coordinators to determine fishing locations.
- Is in charge of fishing, takes part in activities and supervises the team’s activities.
- Keeps an up to date log book (weather conditions, water condition, mechanical breakdowns or repairs, etc.) as well as the necessary certificates (inspection, etc.).
- Conducts routine maintenance.
- Respects regulations set out scientific permits.
- Prepares vessel, gear, and equipment; transports vessel/equipment to Carleton Wharf.
- Winterizes vessel at end of season.
- Monitors safety of crew and vessel.
Fall Fisheries:
- Commands and drives the vessel in order to catch fish and other marine animal-life
- Determines the fishing areas, sets the course and plots the position using available equipment.
- Is in charge of fishing, takes part in activities and supervises the team’s activities.
- Keep an up to date log book (weather conditions, water condition, mechanical breakdowns or repairs, etc.) as well as the necessary certificates (inspection, etc.).
- Conducts routine maintenance.
- Respects regulations set out in licenses conditions and lease agreements.
- Prepares vessel, gear, and equipment; transports vessel/equipment to Carleton Wharf.
- Winterizes vessel at end of season.
- Monitors safety of crew and vessel.
Requirements:
- SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency)
- Basic knowledge in the Fisheries area.
- Basic knowledge of fishing techniques.
- Basic knowledge of laws and rules surrounding this sector of activity.
- Basic knowledge of the aspects of nautical safety.
- Must possess a valid Québec driver’s license;
- Must be able to work on a flexible schedule (evenings and weekends;
- Must be able to travel (locally and regionally)
Scheduling and rates are to be discussed with Fisheries Manager. The captain will have opportunity to select deckhand.
