Annual Fishing Plan Community Meeting
The Natural Resource Directorate (NRD) hosted a meeting with community salmon harvesters on May 22, 2019 at the Natural Resource building. A total of 18 community members were in attendance.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the annual fishing plan as per the Mi’gmaq Salmon Law. A presentation was given that covered the areas of salmon history, the current management regime, scientific activities, stock status, and the 2019 draft-fishing plan. A good and open discussion followed.
Many of the proposed changes were generally accepted, with some feedback to consider. The NRD has recorded all the feedback it received and will review the plan to accommodate the community needs.
A second meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, May 23, 2019 at the Elders Lodge. The meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. Supper is provided. We hope to see you there.
Thank you to all who attended, as your feedback is critical in developing and managing community based fisheries!
