The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is seeking an individual to join the Educational Services division as a First Nations Learning Specialist located in Fredericton.


As a member of the Office of First Nation Education branch, the successful candidate will work with teams to advise the Department in the area of programs and services for First Nations students in Anglophone schools. The Learning Specialist will be the enhancement lead, and lead responsibility for curriculum initiatives pertaining to First Nations. These responsibilities will include the development of culturally appropriate classroom materials, editing and reviewing materials, maintenance of the online teacher portal for classroom resources, identification and facilitation of professional development strategies, revision of current curriculum and development of new curriculum related to First Nations culture, language and history. The Learning Specialist will also be required to consult with First Nations stakeholders in the coordination of projects and participate on various committees, as well as other duties as assigned.


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess a master’s degree in education plus at least six (6) years teaching and work experience related to Aboriginal populations OR a bachelor’s degree in education and a minimum of seven (7) years teaching and work experience related to Aboriginal populations including three (3) years leadership experience as a school administrator. He or she must also demonstrate extensive experience in curriculum development and the ability to lead professional training opportunities. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.


Written and spoken competence in English is required.  Please state your language capability.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the ability to speak the Mi’kmaq and/or Maliseet language, demonstrate knowledge of the band-operated school system and instructional design. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.


The following operational requirement(s) is also required: Some travel within the province.
