LMG Closed for Another Day of Reflection

Based on feedback from the community and consideration from Council, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government will be closed tomorrow, May 20, 2021 for another day of reflection.

Essential services will continue to operate unless otherwise instructed by their supervisor.

COVID-19 Testing Available Without Appointment

Starting today until Friday, May 21st, any Listuguj community member may go to the CLSC in Pointe-à-la-Croix without an appointment to get tested for COVID-19. Tests will be expedited to ensure that community members receive their results quickly.

Community members can present themselves at the CLSC in Pointe-à-la-Croix to get tested between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Atlantic time).

Community Notice on Behalf of the Families

Any information related to the on-going investigation should be reported directly with the police, please contact the Listuguj Police Department at 418-788-2334. Continued Community Support

The Listuguj Social Services Directorate has arranged the following support for the community:

  • Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 – The Mental Health Support Services Team from Gesgapegiag will be at LMDC at 8:30 a.m. to provide in-service and support to the teams within the scope of Education to offer clinical advice and supports for interventions in dealing with children impacted by the tragic events Saturday. Christine Metallic and Douglas Pictou from Families First Support Services (FFSS) will be at LMDC to provide ceremonial support to the teams as well.
  • Benoit Lamarche, Criminologist, will meet with the Youth Centre Team at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 to provide an in-service on best practises for supporting both the YC Team in their interventions with the youth as they will most likely have many questions and feelings that will need to be supported during the healing process.
  • Yves Turgeon, Psychologist, will meet with the LPD on Tuesday, May 18th, in the afternoon to introduce himself, his services as well as an opportunity to debrief from the recent incident as first responders.
  • Claude Boucher from the Crime Victims Assistance Center (CAVAC) will be here in Listuguj at the Haven House on Wednesday, May 19th, and Thursday, May 20th, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. to meet with victims impacted by the events on Saturday as well as provide information sessions as needed for resources regarding the court process and what to expect as it may relate to the client base.
  • Lydia Houle, from CAVAC will also be in Listuguj on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. and again on Friday, May 21st, 2021 starting at 9:00 a.m. for the day to provide the same services as mentioned above.

Community Kitchen Update

Please note that the scheduled food bank for Friday, May 21, has been postponed. It will be moved to Tuesday, May 25th, starting at 10:00 a.m.


Please read carefully as there are some changes to the food bank this week ONLY.

The community kitchen has about 25 1L milk cartons to give away today. The best before date is May 22, 2021. They can be picked up at the food bank, and they will be open until supplies last.

Message to Students from Sugarloaf Senior High School

Our thoughts and hearts are with the community of Listuguj and all those affected by the tragic events this weekend. We send our deepest condolences.

SSHS students from Listuguj are not required to attend School or the Learning Hub tomorrow, Monday, May 17th, so that they may be with the community and access the support services that are being organized in Listuguj.

SSHS will also be providing additional support services at the school tomorrow and throughout this coming week, for students and staff. We urge anyone who would like to speak with someone to reach out and contact the school.

In these difficult times, we will grieve together and be there to support our community however we can.

Community Support and Grief Counselling

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government has coordinated various support services for all those in need through this difficult time. All community members are welcome to access the following services:

  • The Listuguj Community Social Services Directorate has arranged for grief counselling starting at 12:00 until 5:00 pm for both today and tomorrow. Services with trained psychologists and therapists are available at the Youth Centre, the Social Services Building and the Elders Lodge. To avoid waiting periods, please call Molly at 418-788-3039 to schedule a time slot.
  • Support is available at the Healing Grounds from 12:00 to 5:00 pm today and tomorrow.
  • There will be soup and sandwiches served each day at 5:00 p.m. at the Healing Grounds.
  • A Sacred Fire will start today at 1:00 pm at the Healing Arbour and will continue until Thursday.

Following yesterday’s events, the Listuguj Medical Taxi will be closed tomorrow, May 17, 2021. If you go to your appointment, please make sure to get a Medical Attestation along with a Taxi receipt to get reimbursed. Thanking you in advance on this matter.

Out of respect for the families and all those impacted, the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government will be closed tomorrow, May 17, 2021 for a day of reflection. Support services will be available to the community as early as this afternoon. More details will be shared soon.

Emergency Response Update – Suspect in Custody

Listuguj, May 15, 2021 – An individual is now in custody following a reported active shooter situation in the community. An active crime investigation is underway and there will be an increased police presence within the community as the investigation continues. Community members are asked to stay clear of the area.

 

Details are limited at this time; however, we can confirm that:

  • The Listuguj Police Department responded to a situation involving an active shooter barricaded at 94 Riverside West.
  • Additional support was requested to assist in the response and in securing the area, to protect those living nearby, and isolate the situation.
  • The suspect surrendered voluntarily and is now in custody.
  • Emergency responders counted two fatalities on-scene.
  • The residence remains an active crime scene and investigation is on-going.
